Great news! E.I.A. clarifies de-rating for air source heat pumps.
Washington, DC
– January 22, 2009 – Over the years, many heat pump skeptics have used the Environmental Information Agency (E.I.A.) as a reference point when discussing the issue of de-rating of air source heat pumps. The E.I.A. has recently modified the information posted on their website to further explain their stance on the de-rating of traditional versus dual fuel (or “hybrid heat”) heat pump applications.
The E.I.A. has amended their website in an effort to clear up any confusion as to whether or not an air source heat pump’s efficiency rating should be de-rated in northern climates. In January 2009, the E.I.A. officially declared that a de-rating does not apply to air source heat pumps that are installed on fossil fuel furnaces such as “dual fuel” or “hybrid heat” systems.
There are so-called “dual-fuel” or “hybrid” heat pump systems that are basically a heat pump integrated with a forced-air combustion appliance that uses natural gas, fuel oil or propane. noted the EIA, an agency within the U.S Department of Energy. De-rating does not apply to those types of hybrid heat pump/combustion appliance heating systems.

The Minnesota Heating & Cooling Association is pleased that the E.I.A. has differentiated between the traditional heat pump and dual fuel systems. We feel that this clarification depicts a more accurate representation of the efficiency of dual fuel systems and also represents the type of application that 95% of the air source heat pumps are installed in, here in Minnesota. In addition, the MHCA recommends that builders and contractors pay close attention when reviewing operational cost comparison data between traditional fossil fuel heating systems and a dual fuel heating systems to ensure that the dual fuel systems have not been de-rated.
